You own your OWN transformation -Tricia Lauerman

*This entry is dedicated to Tricia Lauerman, which I am saving the 'best' paragraph for last!

Everyone knows everything is bigger in Texas, but aerialists world wide acknowledge Texans for their intensity and ferocity in not only aerial artistry/training, but entrepreneurship as well. Texas, being among the top 9 entrepreneur states, also hosts one of the most widely known, elite pole fitness and aerial silks competitions nation wide. I guess you could say us Texans have a fast paced way of life, and we don't disagree! That must be why it's so admirable for a woman, with a loving family and sense of determination to get up and start her own business. Not just any business, but a pole fitness studio! Complete with Hip hop cardio, Aerial silks, Lyra hoop, and Ballet barre!

My friend Tricia Lauerman, who is one of the most insanely in-shape people I've ever met, runs a home, and takes care of her awesome kids and super cool husband while running a business. I have no idea how she does it, but thank God she does, because Frisco TX has way too many talented polers in the area not to have a training spot! Everything from the wall decor to the garment hangers are absolutely adorable, which just makes it that much more exciting to dance in! Tricia has done an amazing job at putting her own je ne sais quoi on the place, and had great feedback at her recent Grand Opening party.

Laurie Shull Reynolds displaying Lyra hoop art
Performances included a Lyra hoop demonstration but Laurie Reynolds, a certified lyra hoop instructor heavily involved in the Dallas aerial community.
Check out Espy's son!
Following Laurie's lyra hoop awesomeness was an Aerial silks performer and a raffle for a free acro yoga workshop, which my friend and student Natalia luckily won! We then found our seats to prepare for the hip hop performance, led by Kim, A fiercely fit zumba/hip hop cardio instructor who we have all fallen in love with her for her sweet personality and intense training mentality. This lady eats burpees for breakfast. Tricia, Jamie, Espy, Jamie, Espy's SON and I jammed out with Kim in the hip hop showcase and has a blast! That's right, my friends SON showed us up with his hip hop style!

OH, and we can't forget the other brave soul who volunteered for Lillianas awesome zumba demo!

No caption needed.

After the cardio performances, it was time for some pole! YEAH! I enjoyed watching my former students and friends perform, they truly blew my mind in the sense that they revealed a side which they had never before. Adrenaline, it's one hell of a drug! My girl Nissa KILLED IT with her emotion in her routine, which to my belief was her first performance. If that indeed was her first performance, and she brought that amount of passion to her movement, all I have to say is watch out y'all!

Joy, oh Joy. She tapped into her inner dark side and rocked out like a bad ass! First of all, adorable outfit. Second of all, if this showcase had a 'Miss Trixter' title to hand out, it'd be given to THIS GIRL! The combos just didn't stop coming. It was elegant insanity. Growing in my pole fitness journey, Joy has always been by my side helping and encouraging me throughout my progress, and it was amazing to see her completely own her routine and capture the entire audience.

FIERCE

Tricia did her jam, and brought the musicality like the BOSS she is. Which, gave me chills undoubtedly. In fact if you were to get a hold of her video, you can probably hear me screaming every other 8 count because of her being so on point! That must be why she's reigning CHAMP Miss Texas Pole Star Masters div. 2012! Keeping the title in house, Tricia handed the crown off to Miss Divinity, who is a drop dead gorgeous mother and wife residing in the Frisco area. There's nothing more inspiring to a dancer than seeing two of her title winning champion friends perform, along with her many other strong and blossoming dancer friends rock it out together under one roof.

Miss Texas Pole Star Masters Champion 2013

After a few jams, it was my turn to showcase! I picked a song that I often turn to when I'm seeking to evoke my most emotional dancing, and truly 'feel' the music. 'Echoes of Silence' by The Weeknd is a gorgeous lyrical jam that helped me take my sweet time through my transitions and show em what I wanted em to see-PRETTINESS. Not 'Sexyness', or 'Hotness', whatever that even may be. Defending pole fitness is a job we as polers take on, and I choose to reveal to strong and elegant side of pole fitness contrary to the stereotype.

Me, performing at Altitude Fitness, Frisco

After my dance, I was applauded by my friend (slash family) and greeted by Tricia with a hug and a shout out. After giving me props on my 25lb-ish weightloss to the crowd, I thanked her for all her help. She then shook her head and said into the mic "You own your OWN transformation, girl!" which resonated with me so humbly. Because us women are pretty bad at taking compliments, aren't we! She couldn't be more right, I did have her guidance and encouragement the whole time but it was ME who did the dirty work and shred the pounds. That's when this picture was snapped! 2013 was a 'comeback' year for me, which I lost a BUNCH of weight, and gained a ton of sisters and self confidence, thanks to The Girls Room, Altitude Fitness, and my own perseverance!

"Oh my God Becky, look at her guns. They are SO TONED. She looks like one of those, pole dance, all stars..."

You can tell whenever my pole sisters and I just had a successful pole jam, because the MINUTE we're home-sometimes before we even make it there yet, we're on Facebook posting and radiating about our BAD ASS classes we just tackled together. Today was Monday, and our schedule on Mondays ROCKS, so starting my week ends up not sucking so bad afterall! At 6:00 we have Pole Levels 1-3, 7:00 begins Hip Hop Booty Pop (you guessed it, hot, sexy, sweaty twerkin' cardio) followed by Amy's Pole Levels 4-6.

A Facebook post from one of my students
This made me SO HAPPY!!!

-Will write more & elaborate on 3.12.2013-

The tricks we worked on today in Levels 4-6 were drops, and a little bit of jade. You can hear Amy and Natalie encouraging me in the video below, it's hilarious. "Don't be a little bitch" Nat says at one point! Haha, love it! ENJOY <3

ALSO, here's anotherr video I think I forgot to post... Whoops!

3hr Monday Pole Sesh

Hello pole loves and pole admirers!

Today, I kicked my butt! Woo! I started with co-teaching Level 1-3 with Deseree in Irving, and stuck around for Hip Hop Booty Pop cardio class, also taught by Deseree. It is so much fun learning how to isolate your muscles and dance it out with your friends while laughing at yourself in the mirror!

From 8:00-9:00 is Level 4-6 pole class taught by the bad ass Amy Henderson. I love her intense classes, I always learn a lot from what she has to say. I missed the awesome warm up because I was learning the ropes around the studio but was still sweating and warm from Hip Hop Booty Pop, anyways!

Below is a video of what we covered today in Amy's class: Candy Cane into Scotsman. Scotsman would be cool, if it didn't make me have a wonky freakin' foot! You'll see, it's like a dang bird claw. I gotta fix that. ASAP. Everyone seemed to struggle with it, it's a tough move. If ya don't believe me, let me see YOU try it :)

The Girls Room's NEW Level 1 & 2 Instructor!

Wow, a lot has happened since I've last posted! Where do I start?! HMM, I guess with the part where I GOT CERTIFIED IN POLE FITNESS LEVEL 1 & 2!

Karyn Pentecost, the founder of The Girls Room LLC asked me a few months back to consider becoming certified in Pole Fitness: Levels 1 and 2. I OBVIOUSLY responded with a gigantic "YES!" And it could NOT have come at a perfect time. A week prior to Karyn's proposal I had been dumped and cheated on by my boyfriend and best friend of two years. Completely blind sided and heart broken, I turned to pole fitness and used it as my outlet.
I felt empowered and liberated, and it helped me really buckle down on my technique. That being said, I still have a long way to go but learn more each and every day.

Looking back at my entire pole fitness journey with The Girls Room, I am so thankful for whole experience. Had I not spent that $50 on that 5 day fit-pass, I would have never known about this magnificent, underground world of badass, elegant athletes. My membership was an investment in my fitness, my health, and my hard earned money. The money I busted my ass to make went to bettering myself, and that's how I justified my expense. Legit, right? Thought so. :)

About my training process -
I have spent this past weekend following Karyn and Deseree at the Frisco and Dallas location, and have learned so much. Friday evening I sat with Karyn, one on one after teaching 6 beginners the basics of pole fitness. The girls learned Indian Swing and Warrior, and one girl even got a good climb in! My solo session with Karyn was very beneficial and inspiring. It takes strong women to do what we do, as well as start your own business and I can learn a lot from the women within the pole community. Which, by the way, there's more of us in this tight, loving community than you'd think!

Saturday I shadowed Deseree with two FABULOUS bachelorette parties! And let me tell you, we had a BLAST! I cannot wait to throw one for my best friend, Pam in May! We spun and booty popped all day in the studio, learning the basic level 1 & 2 tricks while also mastering some super sexy chair choreography! I just realised almost all of my sentances end in explaimation marks-Guess that's how you know I'm excited. Today (Sunday) Karyn held a Level 1 & 2 workshop in Irving, where we molded a fresh newbie into a beautiful beginner level dancer. I was very beneficial to me to experience a clean slate to help guide in the beginner levels that I'll be teaching.

I haven't uploaded a couple of videos since my last post, so I've included them below! Please check them out and get a taste of what goes on at The Girls Room and stick around to see videos in the future of beginner levels 1 & 2 and The Girls Room, Irving!

Thanks for reading and I hope to see you at the St. Pattys Day competition and showcase at The Girls Room Frisco, 3.16.2013 6:00-9:00!

Cupid can go to hell, if you ask me...

So this week I have been introduced to Cupid.

Not the cute little guy with the smoothe butt cheeks shooting the bow and arrow, but the pole pose. Or hold. Or sit, whatever it technically is, hehe! I, myself get into easiest from an invert, then pushing with my 'kickstand' hand and placing my calve on the pole. In part of my practice video you'll notice my hands fidgit, this is where I almost eat itThe point is, I'm getting there! I'm super pumped about my progress and can't wait to practice it some more. When claudia was teaching it to us, she demonstrated SO many variations and possibilities with the pose. I'll get there.. eventually ;)

LOVE,

Pole Overload

OHLA, my sexy friends!

This post consolidates both Friday night and Saturday mornings pole exercises.
This past Friday I attended my regular Friday evening class at The Girls Room, Irving. Instead of Deseree teaching class as usual, Miss Leah substituted. Deseree and a couple other of The Girls Room members indulged in a fun tropical cruise, we are all extremely jealous of their vacation but are so happy they got to spoil themselves! Leah made sure to incorporate floor work and choreographed combinations in her exercise routines, including a self-titled trick named ‘the Murgo’. Gorgeous! We had a great class. I was extremely warmed up and got a great cardio burn after everything was said and done.
The Friday level 1, 2, 3 class usually consists of a new member or two. New members are always so great to meet, for many reasons. I always enjoy introducing myself to new girls because they already have such admiration for the sport, and always have new questions. When I started my pole journey, I wasn’t really close with any of the other dancers which is unfortunate, so I try to make sure the girls feel welcome so there’s no girl-cattiness in the air, for all our sake! I always tell new members never to give up, because it’s really easy to in this particular sport. Some girls would say bruising up your arms and legs, and callusing the palms of your hands all in the name of grace and fitness isn’t worth it… But to pole dancers, that’s just our everyday routine!

Dancing to a new song is always fun, but a little scary. I like to be very familiar with the beat so I can be sure to hit as many as I can while dancing. I love free styling, but MAN do I feel the pressure when the camera is rolling! I always try to put it at the back of my mind that I’m recording myself, but also want to stay engaged so I don’t fudge up too badly while taping. You’ll notice a point in my dancing, somewhere around 4:00/5:00 minute marker, where I stop dancing, approach Leah, and return to the pole. “Songs not over, keep dancing!” she told me, so I hopped back on the pole. I was one sleepy and sweaty girl leaving the studio.

After dancing to one of Leah’s favorite songs, we decide to pole jam to “Pour some sugar on me”, one of the sexiest songs, ever. Call it old school, but I love it. My friends were wrapping up happy hour down the street, so when I told them I was ditching them for dance class, they requested I send them a little clip of when I did that day. Understand that Leah and I also just danced for nearly 7 minutes to the song prior, which has everything to do with why I boldly state “I’M F%^*ING TIRED” at the very beginning of the video. Anyone who says dancing isn’t a sport has obviously never danced for 10 consecutive minutes.
What I like the most about this video is that Leah and I are in our own little worlds. Leah’s dance style/technique is very sultry and elegant. Pole dancing was invented for women like her. Neither of us are stopping and comparing each other’s dance moves to one another, just simply feeling the music and rehearsing our most recently practiced tricks. I think we both do a great job of hitting the beat and making the most out of the song!

This video is a little project of mine created with a neat app called “Splice”. May have already mentioned it once before, but it’s worth mentioning twice considering how much I know I’ll be using it. In this clip I meshed 3 short videos together to the song of “Sons gonna rise” by Citizen Cope. I’ve been jamming to him a lot lately and though the song would look pretty sexy with my tricks I practiced that morning. Still exhausted and carb-less from the evening before, I filmed the days dance moves and viola, here it is. I finally feel comfortable showing my apprentice, although I’m not 100% in love with it.

I have a long way to go until I’m totally satisfied with all of my moves, beginner and advanced, but continue to get stronger and more fluid in my movements. Tricks that I failed at or struggled with last week were now flowing together for me, encouraging me all the more to try again and try harder. Hopefully tonight’s practice will share the great energy acquired on Friday and Saturday, and it’s effected by all the birthday drinks I had Saturday, whoops!

A late start to my pole week

Yo yo yo

Today is wednesday, obviously. Because it's hump day, and you must know that. Half of the weeks bullshit is already OVER! Word to your mothers. Today was Rockin' Spinner with Amy at The Girls Room, Irving. Amy's classes are always intense, usually consisting of a nice burning warm up, and a challenging as hell trick to try. I seldom master the trick I learn in this particular class the same day I'm taught it, because it's usually pretty difficult.

Todays tricks taught to us were
     No handed cork screw
No handed cork screw, No handed Spread Eagle
     Fooseball into tuck
     Fooseball into tuck, into Hello-Boys
     Hello Boys

Here is a little clip that I made, because I know you love that. I used this neat app called Splice, for my fellow bloggerz & pole sistas.
I am only holding onto the pole with my belly and the top of my legs. You can see towards the end of my cheesesauce video the little bruises I've already aquired in the couple hours passed since leaving dance class. You can probably hear me yelling a little, and cussing, because of the pain, but I tried to pick a loud and upbeat song to drown it out. Pathetic, huh! YOU try it! :) I am getting stronger and learning moves such as the won shown in the little clip challenge me. Love it! Today, I had a little victory.

Other things I've been up to...
I've been painting a 311 tribute piece for my coworker, Gary! Check it out so far.

Also, I've been making a butt ton of delicious, pescetarian dishes. Word up. Nut but aint no surprise :) Here are my cats (You're thinking, 'This check has cats, too!?' The answer is, OF COURSE I have cats.) they bid you GOOD DAY.

I said GOOD DAY

PEACE XO

Friday night combos with Deseree

Photo: Waterfall into Back Bend #PoleFitness

Ohla saucy people, Tonight is Friday! Hell to the yes. Haha. So, I've been feeling pretty sick the past couple days, and I'm pretty sure I have my best friend Pam to blame for that, But I still love her. I skipped out on work today, I was running a high fever until the morning but decided sweating it out at dance might make me feel better. So, I threw together my clothes and headed to the studio for levels 1-3 with Deseree at The Girls Room, Irving.

We warmed up with some squats, did some ab and upper arm exercises and hopped on the pole. We gradually learned a level 1 combination, which could be implemented with upper level variations. I enjoyed doing this lower level routine because it kept my heart rate up, allowing me to keep a good consistent sweat-exaaaaactly what I was lookin' for.

So, here is todays video,

                                     Enjoy!

Triple threat Monday with Deseree

It's Monday, WOO!

             Whatever.

Mondays are usually a pretty long day, considering there's work and three hours of exercises to follow. This evening I attended levels 1, 2, and 3 of pole, then an hour long cardio class called Hip Hop Booty Pop, followed by another hour of Pole. And if you know me well enough, you know the first thing I did when I walked in the door was get to the stove. Eggs, green peppers, and brown rice.  Not sure if it's the best meal combination choice, but it was in my fridge and it's not terribly unhealthy. Boom.

This evening was the first time for me to try Hip Hop Booty Pop, and I tried as hard as my white ass could try. Was I incredibly sexy? Meh. Did I sweat and keep my heart rate up? Oh for sure. So, imagine this white girl in leg warmers trying to "jiggle it to tha flo' ", and there you have it. The class rocked though! I'm already feeling it. I see an Epsom salt bath in my near future. We're talkin, 30 minutes, tops, kind of future. Any who...

Level 1-3 was when I had the most energy, so I took a little video of what we went over. Pretty much just all level 1 things. Although I'm technically a level 3, my classmates, teachers and even Aerial Amy has mentioned recently how important it is to master the most basic tricks to where they just seem, effortless! So, that's what I'm trying to do I suppose.

Below is today's combo, enjoy! Xoxo

Oh, and also...
Tomorrow I begin CAMP HERO! I'll definitely post after that, so yeah.
Wait for it, waaaaiit for it....

Spinner Practice with Amy in the New Year

Yo yo yo, sup sup sup. Today, I feel a little gangster. That's only because a little bit of Amy rubs off on me after each class with her. Her awesome-ness is contagious, and you just excel when you work with her. She scares the grace into you. And you like it. ;)

Today's class was a spinner class. Cat's out of the bag, NO I'm not spinning that cool all by myself. Why did I just give myself away like that, dang it...

Today, we went over the simple straight hold that you see me do before each climb. I found it really hard, and tiring, to maintain a straight frame (none of that feet-swinging-to-the-side stuff) to the pull-up. Then there's the pull-up, Holy balls. That's tough, and I thought I was strong! HA.

I hope you enjoy today's pole sesh and take into consideration...
1.) If you're a non-poler

2.) If you're a NEW Poler
I've been doing this a year and I've gained a lot of strength through cross training and practicepracticepractice

3.) If you're an UPPER level Pole
Teach me your ways. Via anything!

My 1 year anniversary with my love - The pole!

In 2011 when I was 20 years old, I stumbled across a Groupon for a fitness studio in Frisco. I was lured to the coupon by the title, which read ‘$50 for 5 pole fitness class!’. My first thought was ‘Pole fitness? You mean, dancing while also defying gravity- YES.’ Considering I’ve danced pretty much ever since I’ve been able to use my legs, this sounded like a unique and affective opportunity. The only catch was that I was 20, living pay-check to pay-check, working high-end retail management mostly in the evenings. $50 to me meant food AND gas for a week would be budgeted, and I didn’t like that! However, putting my passions (and indulgence first I decided to buy the Groupon, which I’m forever thankful that I did.

During my first 5 classes I learned some of the basic pole fitness moves at the Frisco studio, where I met Claudia Rabago. Her positive energy and helpful attitude made a lasting impression on me, encouraging me to come to class although I was super ungraceful at the sport at the time. (Don’t hate-YOU go try it why don’t ya!) Although I wasn’t a fool proof level 1 pole dancer, I felt confident that I could hone the skill enough to nail some tricks while burning some fat. The 5 entry level classes came and went, but my enthusiasm remained high as ever. So there I was-Intrigued, inspired, and broke. Who wants to spend money on boring stuff like groceries when I could just pay for a pole membership instead?! Sigh... I had to wait for more money to roll in.

Practicing, why yes that's a puppy i'm dancing with!

1 year, a boyfriend and 2 jobs later I found myself wondering about pole fitness. Being a follower of the girls room and vertical fitness Dallas (two of the best and most well-known pole studios in the DFW) I was forced to see pictures of beautiful girls with 6 packs hanging from aerial silks and poles in my newsfeed on the regular and knew I COULD and SHOULD be there doing it, too! All it took was for my boyfriend at the time to say, in his low pitch, cave man, sloth talk to blurt “So uh, that pole fitness thing you used to do-It’s hot. You should like, do it some more”. To give myself some credit, my ex wasn’t a total idiot, you just had to stick around him long enough to realize it. So after bullying myself to quit being a cheapo, plus hearing my man tell me he admired a sexy hobby I enjoyed, I decided to splurge. I indulged myself for my new year. Indulging in fitness is a whole other kind of indulging. It’s like getting high on perspiring and building muscle. I loved it.

Ouch!
The day I gave The Girls Room my credit card information was the day I started attending classes. I wasn’t wasting any time! I bought myself a pair of pole shorts and hopped to it. That’s when I met Deseree, a patient and knowledgeable beautiful young grad student teaching level 1-3 pole fitness classes and workshops at The Girls Room, Irving. With it being my first time attending the Irving location, I was a little nervous about the environment and my classmates. But then again, after a whole year of hating myself for not becoming a member, I decided a few mean girls were the least of my fitness worries. To my surprise, not one girl was catty! I made a couple friends within my first few months and am continuing to build relationships.

One thing I learned about the beautiful women I’ve encountered through The Girls Room is that there’s no medium for normalcy here. I can expect to meet ANYONE at the girls room, varying from shape size and color. Women range from ages 18 to 50 in the pole fitness world, and like dating, in pole fitness age and pant size are just numbers. My skinny friends complain they’re not strong enough, and my curvy friends say they’re not light or graceful enough. Each excuse may be a valid insecurity for someone just trying pole dancing, but in the end it’s just an excuse. Like anyone beginning their fitness journey, ya gotta start somewhere. I see girls in the studio that I’m pretty sure are still drunk from the night before, as well as girls that sacrifice any and all alcohol to better perform for early morning poling. I’ve met teachers, nurses, business owners, stay at home moms, Mormons, atheists at the girls room. Despite the stereotype, I’ve never once met a stripper. And even if I did, it’s no one else’s business, but nearly everyone’s first concern. But let’s not get started on that, we will be here all day… Big girls, skinny girls and muscular girls all have a place in the pole world, which is seriously one of the coolest things about it.
Planking at The Girls Room, Frisco!
Another thing learned at my time spent at The Girls Room is that nothing comes easy. Just after your first class you’ll be eager to get home for a long soak in the tub to ease the soreness. After your first week, you’ll had accrued a handful of bruises where you’re mastering your first spins. People say “Oh you make it look so easy!” or “I could NEVER do that”, but little do they know us pole fanatics have sacrificed much time, sweat, and perfectly un-bruised thighs to be where we are today. Pole. Is. Not. Easy. It is hard. Trust me!

I excelled through levels 1 and 2, and eventually progressed to a level 3 polerina. Before I knew it, I was poling in-between jobs and seeing my boyfriend every chance I got. If I was driving, I was listening to songs I’d later pole to. If I wasn’t poling or contemplating poling, I was watching pole YouTube videos. I found myself in love with three things: Painting, Pole, and my (ex) Boyfriend. My boyfriend eventually got sick of my newfound talent, as I eventually got sick of him being a cheating little man child. After being brutally dumped by my love of two years, I decided to take advantage of my newfound hobby and consume myself in a world of fitness and positive energy. I couldn’t let the break up break ME, which leads me to where I am today. Still healing, I continue to persevere with my passion for dance and channel my love that was once used on a man, toward something that can never break my heart, the pole!

Thank you for taking the time to read this, your time and consideration means the world.

In the future, you will hear more about my opportunities and future at the girls room.
I look forward to revealing some big secrets soon!

Some videos to feed your boredom.

Don't get too excited, some of these are sloppy tiresome footage of post practice combos.
